Leylah Fernandez: I want to bring same energy as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal

US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez wants to bring the same energy to the court as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Growing up, Fernandez enjoyed watching Nadal and Federer and how they connect to the fans. "I remember when I was little watching Nadal and Federer's matches.

I saw how the fans behave with that kind of attitude, that kind of tennis. This is what I want to bring to the court, the same energy as them, to give the fans a smile. I want them to have a good time watching my tennis," Fernandez said, per We Love Tennis.

Fernandez surprised herself with her behavior at the US Open

Fernandez used to be calm on the court but that wasn't really the case at the US Open. "There's one thing that really surprised me was that the more that I'm more outgoing on court and that I try to get the crowd involved, the more I'm playing well.

Usually when I was younger, I'd try to be as calm as possible, just like Federer. "I'm glad that I've discovered that of myself, that I play a lot better when I'm more -- not motivated, but when I'm more outgoing and when I'm using the crowd to my advantage."

After losing to Emma Raducanu in the US Open final, Fernandez admitted it would take time for her to get over the loss. "Well, right now it has sunk in. I am still disappointed. I think this loss, I'm going to carry it for a very long time.

I think it will motivate me to do better in training, better for the next opportunity I get," Fernandez admitted. "But, no, I'm very happy with myself, with the way I competed, and the play I played, the way I acted on court the past two weeks.

I've improved a lot not only tennis-wise but emotionally and mentally," Fernandez said after losing the US Open final. "I'm happy. Next year hopefully it will be just as good."
