Nikolay Davydenko: Hard for Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer to return with such injuries

Former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko believes it will be hard for Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to make a successful comeback to tennis. Nadal, 35, ended his 2021 season prematurely due to a foot injury, while 40-year-old Federer decided to undergo another knee surgery.

“Federer has already done everything, reached such heights. He is trying to prove to himself or to someone that he can still win something at the age of 40," Davydenko said, per Championat. "I think it will be hard for Nadal and Federer to return with such injuries."

Davydenko predicts Nadal, Federer will go down in the rankings

Nadal has played at only tournament since the French Open and he has fallen to No. 6 in the world. On the other side, Federer sits at No. 9 on the rankings list.

"Federer and Nadal will go down in the rankings anyway. They are not playing at all at the moment," Davydenko noted. A few days ago, Nadal underlined that he is determined to make a successful comeback to tennis.

“I’ve known better, but I’m fine,” Nadal said with a smile, per Tennis Majors. “My foot still hurts a bit. It’s been a difficult time. My goal is to get better, knowing that at some point I’m going to have to face difficult and painful stages.

But I have to go through them to put myself back in a position to fight for what I want. I am determined to make it happen." Nadal has been injury prone throughout his career but that didn't stop him from becoming one of the all-time greats.

“I’ve experienced some fantastic things in my career that I never could have dreamed of,” Nadal added. “I had a hard time with injuries too, but I always found a way to get up and move on. Over the years, you also have to be realistic: things get more complicated, the clock is ticking. But I stay positive and appreciate how lucky I am to experience all of these things”.
