World No. 7 Matteo Berrettini believes that Roger Federer is the true ambassador of tennis and he does everything right to promote the game in the best possible way. Federer, 40, has been a tennis icon for the past 20 years and he is considered as one of the greatest players in tennis history.
Federer has never been problematic on the court and his off court work speaks for itself. "Federer. I admire the example he sets and the time he spends playing tennis off the court. I feel like he understands that he has the power to have a influence on the world.
Whether it's doing some charity event or working hard tough on the ATP Players Council. He uses the sport and its popularity to impact as many lives as he can in a very positive way," Berrettini said of Federer, per Punto de Break.
Federer had a tough ending to the 2021 season
Federer played his last tournament of the 2021 season at Wimbledon, before calling it a season in August to undergo another knee surgery. "It was a tough process to take that decision, just because I already had couple of knee surgeries last year," Federer said at the Laver Cup.
"I was really unhappy with how things went at Wimbledon. I was just nowhere near where I wanted to be to play at the top, top level. But I tried my best and at the end, at some point, too much is too much. Now I've just got to take it step by step."
Federer, who turned 40 in August, underlined that he will take his time and that he won't be rushing his comeback. "I've got to first walk again properly, run properly and then do the sidesteps and all the agility work and then eventually I've got to be back on the tennis court," Federer said. It remains to be seen when will Federer be ready to return to action.
