Former world No. 9 Fabio Fognini says he has absolutely nothing against Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic but he is a Roger Federer fan. If Fognini had to choose who to watch, it would be an easy choice for him -- Federer. Unfortunately for Fognini and all Federer fans, the Swiss hasn't played much in the last two years.
In 2020, Federer played only the Australian Open before he underwent two knee surgeries. Federer made a comeback last year but he played only five tournaments before undergoing another knee surgery. Federer hasn't ruled out making a comeback this year.
"No offense to Djokovic and Nadal, but I am a Federer fan. If I have to buy a ticket, I buy it to watch Roger play," Fognini told Gazzetta, according to Sportskeeda.
Fognini praises Nadal
World No. 5 Nadal appeared to be done in the Australian Open final but then he pulled off a magnificent comeback.
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev had a comfortable two-set lead before Nadal stormed back to win 2-6 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-4 7-5. Medvedev had a 3-2 lead in the third set and three consecutive break points but failed to convert. That's when Nadal's historic comeback started.
"He is an incredible fighter. It is difficult to find the words to describe what he has done, these are feats that only the greatest champions can accomplish," Fognini said of Nadal. Nadal broke the all-time Grand Slam record as he now has 21 Grand Slams in his collection.
Nadal will be a top favorite to win the French Open and clinch a 22nd Grand Slam title. "He is very competitive, he has shown it over the years. But here, if Rafa wants to, he will also win Paris and score 22," Fognini added.
Fognini didn't enjoy great success in Australia. Fognini made the Sydney round-of-16 in his first tournament of the season, before losing to Tallon Griekspoor in the Australian Open first round.
