World No. 5 Paula Badosa admits she would like to play world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and beat the Australian tennis superstar. Barty, who finished the year ranked at No. 1 for a third consecutive year, made an outstanding start to 2022.
Barty won Adelaide, before claiming her first Australian Open title. Badosa beat Barty in Charleston last year but lost to the Australian when they met at the Madrid Masters. Badosa says Barty makes everything look easy, just like Roger Federer.
"I think all the tennis players are going to give you the same name, right? I think Ashleigh Barty. When I saw her win in Australia it was incredible. I told my coach that I wanted to play her again to see how it feels.
She makes everything easy. The tough matches, she makes it easy. It's amazing how she plays tennis. She's like Federer on the men's tour. She does everything with a lot of flow and very easy. I think she's the one to beat," Badosa said, per Punto de Break.
Badosa feels she can further improve her game
Badosa has done a lot in just a few months as she is now a Masters champion and a top-5 player. "I haven't thought of many. Perhaps to improve some facets of my game.
There are always things to improve. You have to keep enjoying yourself to be able to compete. I want to stay here, among the top five players on the Tour, playing and winning big tournaments. For that I work every week. That's my main goal," Badosa revealed.
Badosa is now considered as one of the best players on the WTA Tour and she is aware there is big expectation on her. "Last year I finished the season at a great level. You always have pressure because of the many expectations that you have around you. People are, like, want to see what you are going to do this year. Of course, I have that pressure," Badosa admitted.
