Andre Agassi claimed a Major victory in 20 consecutive seasons between 1987-2006, and Rafael Nadal joined him with 20 this year. Roger Federer broke the record at Roland Garros last year with a first-round victory over Denis Istomin.
Roger became the first player with 80 appearances in the Majors and defeated the Uzbek 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 33 minutes. Playing sharp and aggressive tennis, the Swiss dropped 13 points on serve and kept the pressure on the other side.
Federer converted five of 13 break point opportunities and dived over the finish line for one of his fastest wins at Roland Garros. In the second round, Roger defeated old rival Marin Cilic 6-2, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 in two hours and 35 minutes to earn a place in the third round.
Federer got the 10th victory over Cilic in 11 meetings and the fifth in a row, all of them in notable tournaments. The Swiss fired 16 aces and suffered three breaks from eight chances offered to Marin, while converting five return chances that saw him through.
Roger fired 47 winners and 27 unforced errors to dominate his shots, prevailing in the third set and dominating the fourth to advance to the round of 16. Federer scored another win over Dominik Koepfer before retiring ahead of the fourth-round clash with Matteo Berrettini to preserve his knee.
Flink praises Roger Federer
Tennis superstar Roger Federer's impending return is one of the biggest talking points in the sport at the moment. "It’s so commendable in one sense because he’s about to turn 41 in the summer, so the major part of his comeback would be launched as he approaches 42.
It’s asking a lot himself, but I think he remembers last year when he had such bad preparation and he played the French and he had to pull out after winning a few matches, to protect himself, to protect the knee, played a grass court event and Felix destroyed him, yet he still got to the quarters at Wimbledon," Flink said.
"I'm not betting either way, I suspect he is going to give it a go next year and if by Wimbledon next year, things are not turning and he lost early there or he felt he wasn’t up to it anymore, it’s no shame, but I actually do expect to see him out there unless there’s some kind of serious setback when he plays laver Cup in Basel but if things go reasonably well physically there then I see him performing again next year," Flink concluded.
