Roger Federer: 'There is always a lot to laugh about'

Struggling to find form in 2013, Roger Federer managed just one title and suffered 17 losses. The Swiss dropped out of the top-5 for the first time since February 2003! Things picked up a bit for the Swiss in early 2014, reaching the Australian Open semi-final and winning the Dubai title to gain confidence heading into the first Masters 1000 event of the season in Indian Wells.

The Swiss gave up ten points after the opening blow and stole half of the return points to earn four breaks from nine chances and sail home in just over an hour. The Ukrainian served at 39%, a ticket to self-destruction after hitting 12 winners and 25 unforced errors.

Federer mastered his shots more efficiently to score the same number of winners and unforced errors, drawing 25 forced errors from the other side, which helped him tremendously. Federer held 15 in the first game and repeated at 1-1 with a service winner.

Roger reached deuce on the return in game four before Alexandr leveled the score at 2-2 with a powerful serve. The Swiss hit three winners in game five and held the lead after some trouble in the next. The more experienced player secured a break in the next, after a loose forehand from Dolgopolov.

Serving for the set at 5-3, Roger hit four unreturned serves to end the first set in half an hour and gain momentum. At the start of the second set, the Swiss tennis player hit a return winner to break at 15 and move closer to the finish line having won 16 of the last 22 points.

Federer is expected to play in 2023

During a recent interview with Caminada, 20-time Major champion Roger Federer was asked to elaborate on his wife's importance throughout his life and career. "When I got together with Mirka, I didn't have a single title on the tour," said the 40-year-old.

"She's a strong, intelligent woman, and her influence on my career and on me as a person has been huge. Mirka gave me confidence and taught me to do my best. And she comforted me when I lost. In addition, she never let me forget real, real life during the stressful everyday life on tour.

She kept our friends and family together and showed me how important it is to make your own way and not to listen to the media or critics, but to trust the advice of friends and family," he said. "Our life together is intense and exciting, and fortunately there is always a lot to laugh about. We also have four children together, and we are doing all we can to ensure their future. I'm sure."
