Gilles Muller picks Roger Federer ahead of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic

Former world No. 21 Gilles Muller believes Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time as he feels the Swiss was the one that elevated the game to a whole new level. Rafael Nadal is a record 22-time Grand Slam champion, while Federer and Novak Djokovic are tied on the second place with 20 Majors.

Still, some believe Federer is "the tennis" and he should be considered as the greatest player of all time even if he doesn't finish with the all-time Grand Slam record. "If we look at the numbers and the Grand Slams, now it's Rafa.

To be completely honest, for me Roger Federer is above all," Muller said in an interview with Sport Klub. "I think that he elevated tennis to a higher level, made it more popular, the prize funds are now this big largely because of him.

I think the way he played was also spectacular, the most beautiful of all - he made every shot look easy, it was special to watch him. Novak is also a spectacular tennis player and I think he will end up with the most Grand Slam titles, unless something unexpected happens - if everything goes well physically, he will play for a few more years.

It would be easiest to look at the numbers, but when we take everything into account, I would put Roger above Rafa and Novak."

Muller never managed to beat Federer

Muller, 39, retired from professional tennis in 2018.

During his career, Muller met Federer five times. The first meeting between Muller and Federer came at the Indian Wells Masters in 2005, when the Swiss beat the Luxembourgian in straight sets. Muller and Federer clashed four more times and the Swiss claimed four more straight-set wins.

Two of the five meetings between Muller and Federer came at the Grand Slam level. In the end, Federer claimed five straight-set wins over Muller and won each of the 12 sets they played.
