2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina reveals she has always admired Roger Federer as she thinks the Swiss has an "amazing game." After winning Wimbledon, Rybakina held a Q&A session on Instagram. One of the fans wanted to know who was Rybakina's inspiration growing up.
"I've always liked how Roger Federer is playing. Just his game is amazing but, yeah, except him, I was just enjoying watching the matches no matter who plays and, yeah, it's just a joy to watch any match especially when it's great fights," Rybakina said.
Rybakina became a Grand Slam champion at the place where Federer is an icon
Rybakina, who was the first-ever Kazakh to reach a Grand Slam final, defeated Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final 3-6 6-2 6-2.
Rybakina was just 1-2 on grass this year before arriving to Wimbledon and she didn't really have big expectations. After winning Wimbledon, Rybakina said she felt relaxed at the start of the tournament but started to feel tension as the tournament was progressing.
"Yes, it's true because we were working hard but it was a tough last few months with the injuries. I was sick, I didn't have good preparation for Wimbledon. So I kind of relaxed and I didn't have any expectations.
I was actually thinking ahead a bit, that I need to do good preparation to be physically better for the US swing," Rybakina said on the WTA insider podcast. I was just so relaxed from this tournament. I think this is something that helped me to get through the second week.
After the last few days, I was just starting to be nervous because I was thinking that, yes, it's already closer to the final and today I was playing for the title, so of course I was more nervous."
