Marin Cilic pays tribute to Roger Federer

Former world No. 3 Marin Cilic called Roger Federer "an absolute legend" and thanked him for everything that he has done for the game of tennis. Last Thursday, 41-year-old Federer revealed his plans to retire from professional tennis after this week's Laver Cup.

Cilic, who clashed Federer 11 times, was among many who paid a tribute to the Swiss. "Cheers to an absolute LEGEND! 🥂 Thank you @rogerfederer for all you've done for tennis & the example you set on & off the court to inspire millions.

It was an honour to share the court with. Wishing you & the family all the best!"

Federer defeated Cilic for his Grand Slam title

In the 2018 Australian Open final, Federer defeated Cilic 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3 3-6 6-1 to win his 20th Grand Slam title.

"I'm so happy, it's unbelievable,” Federer said after beating Cilic for his 20th and what turned out to be final Grand Slam title. "It's been a long time waiting for this final. It's easier in the afternoon, but when it's at night you think about it all day.

I'm happy it's over now. It's a dream come true and the fairy-tale continues. After the year I had last year, it's incredible." Overall, Cilic didn't enjoy much success versus Federer. Cilic, 33, defeated Federer only once in those 11 meetings.

But that one win came in one of the best moments for Cilic. In the 2014 US Open semifinal, Cilic handed Federer a straight-set defeat. After beating Federer, Cilic also defeated Kei Nishikori to clinch his first and lone Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Since the 2014 US Open, Cilic and Federer clashed in two Grand Slam finals. In the 2017 Wimbledon final, Federer overcame Cilic in straight sets. Six months later, Federer beat Cilic in the Australian Open final to win what turned out to be his final Grand Slam title.
