Haas-tastic Upset: Tommy Haas Stuns Roger Federer in Epic Grass Battle

Tommy Haas played his last season on the Tour in 2017, and he was still a dangerous rival, especially on grass! His great friend Roger Federer found that in Stuttgart, facing Tommy in the second round and experiencing a 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 loss.

The German saved a set point in the second set and prevailed in an hour and 54 minutes for a place in his first ATP quarter-final since Rome 2014! Federer played his first match since the Miami Masters final, skipping clay and hoping for another strong run on his beloved grass.

The Swiss made a perfect start against the German and forged a set and a break advantage in no time. Like a year ago against Dominic Thiem, Roger squandered a match point in the second set and experienced a loss, his first in the opening match of a grass-court event since Wimbledon 2002!

Also, Haas became the first player from outside the top-300 who beat Federer since Washington 1999! In addition, the German became the oldest ATP quarter-finalist since Jimmy Connors in Halle 1995.

Tommy Haas prevailed over Roger Federer in Stuttgart 2017.

Federer fired 23 aces and won nine points more than Haas.

However, he got broken two times from three chances offered to his opponent and ended on the losing side. Tommy survived nine out of 12 break opportunities, doing his best in the second set tie break and using that momentum in the decider to notch his last ATP victory!

Roger had the upper hand in the shortest rallies up to four strokes thanks to service winners. Tommy stayed in touch in the more advanced exchanges and did his best to celebrate the win. Haas sprayed a backhand error in the encounter's opening game and suffered a break at 15.

Federer cemented the advantage with a perfect volley winner in game two and repelled a break point in game six to move 4-2 in front. Roger broke again in game seven and held at love a few minutes later for 6-2 in swift 22 minutes!

Doing everything right so far, the favorite grabbed a break at 1-1 in the second set and forged a massive advantage. However, Tommy pulled the break back in the next game to level the score at 2-2 and start his comeback. The German saved a break point at 4-4 with an ace and reached a tie break.

Tommy wasted two set points at 6-4 and another at 7-6 before facing a match point at 7-8. Haas saved it after Federer's backhand error and clinched the set after the rival's double fault at 9-8 to force a decider. Tommy denied three break points at 1-2 in the final set and gained a boost.

Haas broke Federer in game five to build the advantage and faced the ultimate challenge in the next one. The German saved four break points and delivered a vital hold that pushed him 4-2 ahead and closer to the finish line.

Tommy served for the win at 5-4 and fired three winners to emerge at the top and celebrate his final ATP victory against his great friend.
