Wimbledon sensation Roman Safiullin, 25, says he still perfectly remembers watching the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic competing at The Championships. Safiullin, ranked at No 92 in the world, defeated Denis Shapovalov to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal in his main draw debut at The All England Club.
Safiullin is having quite a Wimbledon debut and his own moment at the most prestigious tournament in the world. "Yes, of course. Of course, when I was a kid I was watching basically all the tournaments which I could watch, and especially Wimbledon.
So I saw Roger and Novak, Rafa winning here. So it's a great memory. I'm happy to see that downstairs we have a board where are all the champions here. It's really nice to see the whole history of the winning Grand Slams," Safiullin said.
Safiullin on the money he is about to collect
By reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinal, Safiullin guaranteed himself to return home with €394,400. For Safiullin, this is going to by far the biggest cheque he has netted in one tournament.
"Honestly, I did not check it yet the prize money, my prize money for the quarterfinal. I mean, I hope it will change it and that I can make even more in the future. So invest in my team and to make even more in the future," Safiullin said.
Also, Safiullin hopes this Wimbledon run will lead to more positive results and success. "It should for sure help me with this confidence, and especially this confidence is not easy to get, because the confidence, you get it only through the matches, through the winning matches, and that's what I'm basically doing now," Safiullin said.
In the Wimbledon quarterfinal, Safiullin is set to play against fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev. Going into the match, Medvedev is the favorite but Safiullin has proved that he cannot be taken for granted. It remains to be seen if Safiullin can continue his stunning run at The All England Club.
