The Laver Cup has finally begun, the 2023 edition which will be played in Canada, to be precise in Vancouver and everyone was waiting for Roger Federer. The co-founder of the event dedicated to the legendary Rod Laver, was present in the stands of the Rogers Arena and, when the cameras focused on him, the crowd went into ecstasy, delighted to once again see their hero witness a tennis match.

"Many were waiting for it, Roger Federer is finally in the picture, and next to him I see Mary Joe Fernandez," said the Eurosport commentator. Here is the video shared on X by Eurosport:

The first day of the Laver Cup

The Team World started the new edition of the Laver Cup in style at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

The four victories achieved by the red team have significantly influenced the comparison with the Team Europe, which will have to completely review its debut to try to recover. Naturally nothing is lost, given that today, on Saturday each match will be worth 2 points and even 3 on Sunday.

Ben Shelton won the match against the fearsome 19-year-old Arthur Fils. After losing the tie-break 7-4, the Frenchman gave in and left the second set 6-1, failing to react and therefore extend the match. Then, to conclude the daytime session, Francisco Cerundolo got the better of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with the final score of 6-3, 7-5.

The Argentine immediately took off at the start, taking the lead to 5-1, with only one missed pass allowing the Spaniard to make the deficit less bitter. In the second Fokina didn't take advantage of the chance to serve for the set at 5-4, then surrendering the advantages.

Everything was easy also for Felix Auger-Aliassime, eagerly awaited given that he is the only tennis player playing at home. The Canadian defeated the other Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-3. The double ended the day, again in favor of the World team.

The American duo Frances Tiafoe-Tommy Paul managed to prevail in the third set against the pair formed by Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils. The most balanced match of day 1 recorded the partial comeback of the team in blue, after losing the first set, they won the second set 6-4, losing at the best 10-6 in the tie-break match.
