The ESPN journalist Eduardo Varela's post on how and when Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer would retire from tennis got almost 1,000 retweets and around 2,300 likes. 'Sources inform me that Federer and Nadal are planning a farewell season together for 2020,' Varela wrote. In the Tokyo Olympics year, the Swiss will turn 39, the Spaniard will be 34 years old.
Looking at the rumours increasing more and more as days went on, Nadal's agent Benito Perez Barbadillo wrote a tweet. 'Eduardo, with all how god I love you, and you know it... change sources that with these ones the water becomes a flood. I hug you and we will see each other soon.' The doubles match they played together at last year's Laver Cup may have played a factor in fanning these rumors but both players go their way. Asked during Wimbledon if he would be at the highest level even if Nadal wasn't there, Federer replied: 'I heard comments as well that people didn't think that maybe I would not be but look, if it wouldn't have been Rafa, it would have been somebody else who would have pushed me, and if I would not have been around, somebody else would push,' Federer said. Also, Nadal has often stressed that he wants to play as long as possible and that his decisions do not depend on what the Swiss does.
