Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer 6-4 6-4 to win his first Cincinnati title ever. Here, the Serbian player had lost 2008 and 2011 finals to the Brit Andy Murray, 2009, 2012 and 2015 finals to Federer always in straight sets.
That's why this win is probably more special than many others. Djokovic played a great tennis from the beginning to the end, showing to be in a very good physical shape despite he had three tough three-sets matches against the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the Canadian Milos Raonic and the Croatian Marin Cilic.
On this aspect, Federer could have been advantaged as he was forced to the third set only once, against his compatriot Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals. And instead it was a very tough match for the 37-year-old, who saved two break points in the opening game of the final.
Djokovic would then break on 3-all, and held at 15 his final serve to take the first set. In the second game of the second set on serve Djokovic was leading 40-15 and lost the following four points to get broken by Federer.
However, Novak broke straightaway in the third game, and then again on 3-all, recovering from a 40-0 disadvantage on Federer's serve. On 5-4 Djokovic converted the first match point on 40-30 to win his 70th ATP career-title.
With this result Djokovic becomes No. 3 in the ATP Race to London just behind of the Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Federer himself. The Belgrade native can only keep earning points by now until the end of the season. Here below match highlights.
