Roger Federer has officially added a new ATP 500 event to his 2018 schedule. The Swiss will compete at the Basel's Swiss Indoors from 22 to 28 October 2018 for the 18th time in his career. Last year Federer defeated the Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro in an amazing three-set final, 6-7 6-4 6-3.
After that match Federer withdrew from the Rolex Paris Masters, and this year he is set to do the same thing as well as Roger does not feature in the tournament Promotional Video. In 2017 Federer signed a new three-year contract with Basel until 2019 included.
The first of so far 17 appearances (excluding the upcoming one of this year) came in 1998 when at just 17 years of age he lost to the American Andre Agassi in the first round. In 2013 Federer played without any appearance fee due to some disagreements with the tournament director Roger Brennwald but now their relationship is as strong as ever.
Many top players are committed, including del Potro again and this year the world No. 5 Alexander Zverev as well. The 21-year-old German is making his second appearance here after 2014 when he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the first round.
Stan Wawrinka, who never reached the final here, the 2016 champion Marin Cilic, the 2014 finalist David Goffin, the younger players Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas entered as well. This year a new 10,000 people stadium will be opened in the same tournament site as in the previous years, but it won't be named after Roger Federer Arena due to some political issues.
