Roger Federer: 'US Open had some issues, it was extremely humid'

Roger Federer came back to speak about his US Open fourth-round loss to the Australian John Millman in an interview to TennisTV in Shanghai. The Swiss player admitted that the weather was too much. 'US Open had some issues, it was extremely humid and hot, for some reason I struggled for the first time in a very, very long time so it was unfortunate in those conditions, and Millman played a very good match so I did not even feel too disappointed', said Federer.

'I was just happy that the match was over at some stage. And Cincinnati, I think I played a decent match considering I didn't play as well as I can and making the finals was not even so bad. So disappointing for me to lose the final, I know I can play much better but Novak does not lose when the opponent is playing at that level.

Overall it was a bit disappointing maybe but it is what it is and there was no time to dwell over it. It was about showing my reaction, I played well at the Laver Cup, and in all the matches that I played in, I had to spring in a step.

I was excited to play again, show what I can do and I was able to do it.' Federer also spoke about how it feels to return to a tournament as a defending champion: 'This is fun, because even though it adds pressure because you want to win again, even though you have to remind yourself that you have to take one step at the time, but I have had a good preparation, I played very well at the Laver Cup, I reacted well after the US Open so I am just very happy where I am at in my mind, my body and ready to go.

Yeah, I am just very happy to be back in Shanghai, last year I played great against Rafa (Nadal) in the final and so it was definitely something special.' ALSO READ: Rafael Nadal: Worse players than David Ferrer won a Grand Slam title
