Roger Federer came back in a successful way on the Tour for the first time since his US Open fourth round loss to John Millman. The Swiss defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev in three sets, 6-4 4-6 6-4, in what was their first meeting on the ATP Tour.
Federer won 82% first serve points and 36% second serve points. He hit ten aces, but during the match, he clearly had some up and down like in the second set when Medvedev managed to break him and take it to a third. The 37-year-old still managed to go through after an hour and 52 minutes, he will now face Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round seeking his seventh match win at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
Federer is the defending champion, at the tournament last year he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in the semis and Rafael Nadal in the final. Federer also praised Medvedev's volley, the ball cameback on the Russian's side of the court.
'What was great about that shot is he didn't maybe want that, but he gave himself the best chance to make the ball. When you have the right intention, right belief and right stretch, good things do happen.' About his next opponent, the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, Federer added: 'I have a lot of respect for him.
He's just a tough guy, you know. So you have to bring it. Could be similar like today. A lot of long rallies potentially.' Federer never lost to Bautista on seven meetings, in Shanghai third round four years ago the Swiss played a brilliant tennis.
