Roger Federer: 'I have a lot of respect for Bautista Agut, he is tough guy'

Roger Federer praised Roberto Bautista Agut ahead of their third round match at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Thursday. The Swiss knows it won't be an easy match. 'He has done well here before beating Novak (Djokovic, in 2016) so I am aware of that', Federer said.

'I haven’t followed his season super-closely to be honest because I check in and out of the tour too often. I have a lot of respect for him and he is a tough guy. You have to bring it and it could be similar to today.

A lot of long rallies potentially. Maybe because he doesn’t serve as big as Medvedev and I can take bigger cuts at the ball earlier. I am excited at playing Roberto. I like his demeanour, he is a great fighter and I like playing against those type of players.' Federer also analyzed his win over Daniil Medvedev: 'It was extremely difficult, that is why I was very happy at the end.

It was a good fight and I enjoyed it. The crowds were unbelievable. From the first round for them them to come out and support me like they did was a wonderful feeling. Medvedev definitely showed why he is ranked so high right now and he is only rising.

He is obviously confident winning Tokyo and then adjusting this this surface, which is not easy as he only had a day off and a lot of matches. Credit to him for hanging tough and making this a really good match. I played some great tennis at the end to make a difference and I am happy to be in the next round tomorrow.

He was maybe a touch better at the end but I had some adjusting to do. Because of his play in the second set I tried some slices, then I tried to hit hard and then I tried to come into the net. I really tried a bit of everything and that’s why I am as happy right now because it did work by trying a bit of everything and taking the right decisions at the end.'
