Franco Davin has been on the Tour as a coach for many years. Not too many know tennis and players like him. In an exclusive interview to Tennis World USA in Rome, Davin spoke about Roger Federer. "I first saw him in the Orange Bowl final with Guillermo Coria.
I was working in the Argentinean tennis federation and Coria was amazing. He played with Federer and I never thought Roger could win," confessed Davin. "Coria was 16, 17 years old but he was already playing at a very high level.
Roger had blonde hair, won 7-5 7-5 in an unbelievable match. We were like five people watching the match and all of us were surprised him. He is a genius. I faced him several times with more players. With Gaudio for example. Federer was serving down 0-40 in the third set, Roger hit five winner serves.
He beat Gaudio 6-0 6-0 in the ATP Finals. I saw him doing unbelievable things. With del Potro too. Perfection in tennis is Federer." On Fabio Fognini's character, Davin added: "Fabio is not a disrespectful person.
Sometimes when he does not behave correctly, it's not because he wants to hurt someone. He is a great person and in the locker room, everyone loves him. That makes me calm. But he is Italian, he has that fire inside and sometimes the situation goes away from him...
But he is mostly happy. Now he is a father and he has the advantage of having a former player like Flavia next to him."
