Haas praises ATP Stuttgart: Roger Federer played for three years in a row

Tommy Haas is the Stuttgart Mercedes Cup Ambassador. The German former player will soon head to the city after playing the French Open men's legends and in an interview to Bild he spoke about what makes the event special.

"For me, it's one of the best ATP 250s out there", said Haas, who defeated Roger Federer in 2017 Stuttgart saving a match point. "The best decision was to switch to grass a few years ago. Because Stuttgart now is preparation ahead of Wimbledon after the clay season.

Especially for the new generation and the players who are close to the top 10. The player's field in Stuttgart is strong, there are a lot of players who can go far in Wimbledon. Khachanov is a top ten player besides (Stan) Wawrinka, (Nick) Kyrgios, (Philipp) Kohlschreiber, (Jan-Lennard) Struff, (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga, (Gael) Monfils - it's something you should be proud of.

It depends on the draw, but Raonic and Kyrgios are my favorites." Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev are not committed to playing. "Federer was there for three years in a row. And I would be happy to see Zverev in Stuttgart in the future.

I mean, the Tournament Director Edwin Weindorfer is doing well to keep wild cards free as long as possible. You never know what happens", said Haas, who was managed by Weindorfer in his career. Last year Federer had two thrilling final rounds, defeating Kyrgios in a third set tie-break and Milos Raonic in the final. The Swiss have not committed to playing in Stuttgart this year as he competes in the French Open.
