The Roger Federer effect: Halle draws stunning attendance

115,550 people attended the Noventi Open in Halle last week. Tournament Director Ralf Weber admitted that increasing the attendance is almost impossible as they cannot have a bigger facility, but he is still satisfied with the many tickets sold thanks to Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

"We have one of the strongest competitions in tennis history. We saw drama day-by-day, emotional world-class tennis," said Weber, who also reflected on Noventi replacing Gerry Weber as the title sponsor: "There was no time to consider of selling the tournament licence, but we saw how popular the event is over the world.

There were a lot of requests, also from big companies and countries. But we want the tournament history to continue over the next decades. We will discuss keeping Noventi as a title sponsor or not. This year our fans had a great experience, watching superb tennis and many entertainment highlights."

More than 5,000 tickets have been sold for the 2020 edition. "We can only suggest all the fans to book tickets in an initial stage. For the next year, we already have four top ten players. Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Kei Nishikori and Karen Khachanov.

We are also speaking with Dominic Thiem." Federer commented on how it will feel to head into Wimbledon as the second-seeded player through the Wimbledon seeding formula. Rafael Nadal, who is the world no. 3, will be the third seed.

“It might make no difference if Rafa is in my section," he joked. "I guess you could say I avoid Novak in the semis. But at the end of the day that is so far away."
