In an interview to EFE, the former French Open winner Arantxa Sanchez Vicario commented on the 15-year-old Cori Gauff's US Open chances. The Spaniard said: "I hope she enjoys herself, that she does the best possible, but you do not have to put too much pressure because she is very young to handle so much responsability."
On the WTA setting rules for the amount of tournaments that younger players can compete in, Sanchez Vicario added: "It's to protect, in order to have a longer career and avoid injuries. In Wimbledon she had an amazing run, you could already see at a junior level that she was progressing and that she was ready to make a change.
When I turned professional I had started when I was very young too, and there were no rules to protect younger girls." On Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, Sanchez Vicario added: "They are really marking an impressive era for men's tennis.
They are great players, legends, and I think tennis owns a lot to them. When they are not there anymore, the new generation will be there. You will see the void when they are not there." On the women's Spanish tennis, Sanchez Vicario said: "We have to be proud because there is a team that can do bug things and one day they will win Davis Cup like I and Conchita Martinez did back in the day. What you have to do is to try to support much more."
