Roger Federer: I should have won 2009 US Open, maybe 2014 too

Roger Federer has some regrets looking back at his US Open runs. The Swiss player has not been triumphing in New York since 2008 and he was asked what years he should have won and instead ended up losing. "2009 obviously," said thè Basel native referring to his five-set loss to Juan Martin del Potro.

"I don't know which year I lost to Cilic, you know (2014). Things were looking okay there after Novak lost and Nishikori was in the finals and I was in the semis against Cilic. Would have thought that maybe I had a good chance, but Marin came out and just crushed me.

I think maybe those were my best chances. I don't know about the finals against Novak, and the rest I don't remember. There you have it." At the 2019 US Open, Federer lost in the quarter-finals to Grigor Dimitrov.

It was his first loss to the Bulgarian in eight matches. Federer said he was affected by back pains before and during the match. From 20th-22nd September, Federer will be playing the Laver Cup for Team Europe. This year, the Laver Cup, named after Rod Laver, will be played in Geneva, Switzerland.

The world No. 3 has also committed to a few exhibition events, including one against Del Potro in Argentina. He will also be playing an exhibition against Alexander Zverev in Colombia. Both events will be in November.
