In an interview to Eurosport the former world No. 1 Mats Wilander spoke about Kei Nishikori's future. "Nishikori needs matches, wins, beat different kind of players, different styles. He gets hot for a while and then something suddenly happens.
We cannot get figure it out. He has a inner to win a Grand Slam at some point. He needs to stay focused, patient and he has to train hard because there will be one day when Roger, Rafa and Novak are not around and somebody like Nishikori'd better be here to pick up the business."
On Venus Williams losing to Elina Svitolina, Wilander said that the American will still be around for a while: "We know she is not gonna retire because she has played a good match against the world No. 5. She has won a couple of rounds in Cincinnati, she won a round here, she pushed Svitolina to a close match, there is no reason for to really retire.
She has pushed it to a high level and she is dangerous on any surface." Wilander praised Serena Williams: "I do not understand how you can come out and play a tennis like that because it's very difficult to play like that in the first round and after what happened in last year's final against Naomi Osaka.
Very difficult to be there after three consecutive Grand Slam finals. She is so good in focusing on her opponent and the ball. Any player who faces her will have some big troubles. Serena wins a lot of Grand Slam matches 6-1 6-1 in less than a hour.
So she doesn't get the hours on the court in matches so she needs to play more tennis. Otherwise she needs to practice a lot."
