The CEO of the Roger Federer Foundation Janine Händel spoke about the Match for Africa 6 that will feature Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal facing each other in a singles match plus the Swiss pairing up with Bill Gates against the Spaniard and another prominent philanthropist, on Saturday February 7 2020 in Cape Town.
Händel outlined that, despite a record 48,000 spectators will attend the match, the income will not be the highest ever for a Match for Africa edition as tickets prices start at a very low level. "It's a bit different than others", explained Händel.
"The main purpose is not to raise money for the Foundation. The most important thing is that he will play for the first time in his mother's home country, that he will bring high quality tennis to Africa, that's Roger's dream.
Nevertheless all the proceeds of this event will be donated to the Roger Federer Foundation and its educational programmes in Africa. More than 10’000 tickets costed just $11 in order to let all the people to come to watch the event."
Federer had the idea for years to play a match in Africa. Händel added: "When we started planning this Match in Africa, we did not really know how the public would react to it. But the welcome by the fans was overwhelming”.
