Leonardo Mayer recalls 2014 Shanghai loss against Roger Federer

In an interview Leonardo Mayer recalled his three-set loss to Roger Federer in the 2014 Shanghai second round when he wasted five match points. "I was so disappointed after that match", admitted Mayer. "There was nothing that could make me being a bit less sad than how I was."

Mayer also said he is available to play the Davis Cup finals in Madrid: "In a very short conversation with the captain (Gaston Gaudio) I told him I was ready to play. But I see it unlikely because players are playing well.

Everything is up to him and how well they will play in the following matches." Reassessing his season, Mayer added: "I started very well the year, some good results, I was also doing well physically but I was not consistent.

In tennis it's very difficult to perform in the same way from one year to the other. You can play well a match and then you have to do it again in the next one. I have a good career but I try to improve it and keep my ranking position despite my age."

On his schedule, Mayer concluded: "I will play the Buenos Aires Challenger before the South American swing. It's nice tournaments where you have to try to play well, because there are many players who try to win, which puts pressure", said Mayer, who said his goal is to start the 2020 season playing ATP tournaments.
