Medvedev:'I used to hate Federer!I wanted to breaks rackets like Safin did'

In an interview Daniil Medvedev spoke about his childhood. The 23-year-old admitted his compatriot Marat Safin was a big inspiration for him. "I started watching his matches and I thought that I wanted to be like Marat, I want to break rackets - it's great.

But I grew up with his tennis. What he did for Russian tennis was surprising", said Medvedev, who used to hate Roger Federer: "Yes, at ten years of age. From the early rounds I cheered on other players because I wanted his opponents to win."

The Moscow native and his family realized he could have become a great player in 2014. That's when he stopped studying at public High School. "My mother always wanted me to keep studying. But if I stopped earlier, I may have done better in tennis."

Medvedev earned around $4 million over the last two months. His family made sacrifices at start and in 2016 Daniil got a $50,000 bonus from Tecnifibre in partnership with ATP. "In Russia, we pay our team by ourselves... If you spend €30,000 a month for flights, hotels and food it's good even if it's a lot of money."
