Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer need to train differently, says former coach

Paul Annacone spoke about the differences between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The Swiss's former coach said: "Every player is different. You look at someone like Nadal, and you look at how Rafa trains, how much intensity and energy he puts in every single shot and movement.

This is what Nadal was taught of. This is important for Nadal to play like this, he has to do it to believe he has the confidence to win. Roger had a different kind of talent. Because Roger does it differently, he needs to train differently.

As a coach, when the player gets to be 18, 19 years old, you have to understand what player you are and what different you have." "It was a great few years with Roger, obviously one of the greatest to ever play the game", continued Annacone.

"So for me, it was very interesting to spend time in the environment. We are still very good friends, I speak with him all the time. I enjoyed participating in an environment like this because I learned a lot as well. And in an individual sport, it definitely has a different way to motivate yourself.

And for me to watch Roger and to understand why he was motivated and then to take that and to take it in an environment where we can help him, maximise his talent, was a lot of fun. He has a great team around now, he always had, he made terrific decisions." Federer will be playing the Rolex Shanghai Masters next. Nadal withdrew from the event with a wrist injury.
