Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley spoke about the event that will be played in 2020. Tiley is excited about the line up that will feature all the players ranked in the top-100 plus Andy Murray competing. In January earlier this year, Murray had announced his possible retirement from the professional tour.
“Both the men’s and women’s fields are extraordinary and filled with a mixture of former champions and amazing newcomers," said Tiley. “Will it be the year for Serena to come through again after all that she has done in tennis, or will we see another breakthrough champion emerge? Can Roger Federer pull off another major at one of his happiest Grand Slam destinations? Will Novak continue to dominate or will it be time for the next generation of players to step up? One thing is for sure, there will be plenty of drama and no shortage of incredible matches for fans to see”.
Wheelchair player Dylan Alcott said: “I don’t take for granted that I can say I’ve won my home Grand Slam five times. Roger can’t say that because Switzerland doesn’t have a Grand Slam."
Tiley also has huge hopes on the Australian players like Nick Kyrgios and Ashleigh Barty: “This could well be the year we see an Aussie reach the final stages of the event and even win it. Barty will have the backing of the entire nation and has now tasted Grand Slam success. There is no reason why she can’t go all the way”.
