Roger Federer: 'I played some aggressive tennis against Ramos'

Roger Federer analyzed his opening-round match win over Albert Ramos in Shanghai. The Basel native said: "First round never easy. I finished playing pretty quick so I had to be very focused especially in the beginning, a few points really decided the match.

I wanted to come out of the blocks quickly and then, as you said, he had beaten me a few years ago here so I expected it to be tough. I played some aggressive tennis and I am quite happy." On how it feels to be supported by the Chinese fans, Federer added: "It's a tremendous feeling but I never take it for granted.

It's nice that the crowd never faded away, they were always on my side and I know a lot of people come from far, long trip, travelling, not cheap, so I appreciate all your support and I hope you had a great time today."

Federer will play either David Goffin or Mikhail Kukushkin in the third round. Goffin defeated Richard Gasquet in his first-round match on Tuesday. The Belgian won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Kukushkin defeated Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets as well 7-6, 6-4.

Goffin lost to Federer in the fourth round of the US Open this year. Federer has a 9-1 win-to-loss against Goffin. Against Kukuskhin, the world No. 3 leads the head-to-head 3-0 although they have not played since Basel 2015. Goffin has a 1-0 record against Kukushkin in their head-to-head although their only match against each other was in 2014, in the Davis Cup World Group tie.
