Thiem can look at Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to improve, says father

In an interview to Laola Dominic Thiem's father Wolfgang spoke about his son's China Open title in Beijing. Wolfgang said: "It was my first time in China and it was really an experience. From Beijing we went to Wuhan for two days and then again in Beijing and now we are in Shanghai.

The tournament is very well organized and there were many people in the stadium. It was very nice", he recognized speaking on Monday. Reassessing Dominic's performances, Wolfgang added: "He played very well from the first round.

He was down on the head to head meetings against Richard Gasquet, and yet he won the first round. Of course, the Chinese wild card player in the second round is slightly worse than the others. Then he faced Andy Murray, who is playing really well again.

I think he will soon be among the best players or at least on the top 20. Khachanov and Tsitsipas were high level matches because they played well. You can win only if you played having courage. Dominic coped with tough situations even if sometimes there was a bit of a bad luck."

Asked what Thiem can improve on, Wolfgang concluded: "The switch to the net needs to be better. The return worked pretty well last week and it actually improved over the last months. He should also mix up on serve. Federer and Djokovic are doing it very well. You cannot compare it to a Zverev or Tsitsipas because they are 15 centimeters higher."
