Roger Federer: 'I am sure Rafael Nadal watched my win vs Novak Djokovic'

Roger Federer spoke to ESPN about his win over Novak Djokovic. The Swiss said: "It's nice. I've tried so hard and come so incredibly close against Novak in the last couple of years. Wimbledon obviously was epic. Paris Bercy last year I lost 7-6 in a third as well, it was epic.

We've had so many cool matches in the past so it was nice to get one, especially there was a lot riding on this match, I'm sure Rafa (Nadal) was watching too, and from that standpoint it was a magical night for me here at the 02, no doubt", said Federer.

Nadal has now guaranteed the year-end No. 1 rankings position with Djokovic's loss. Federer added: Great atmosphere, a great opponent here in London at The O2, definitely incredibly special. Just a night I enjoyed from the beginning.

I played incredible, and I knew I had to because that’s what Novak does and I was able to produce. So it was definitely magical. There was a lot riding on the match. I think I served great, had great anticipation, a clear game plan and it worked to perfection tonight, and hopefully not the last time against Novak.

But even if it didn’t, it was all worth it. It was a great performance tonight from me”. The ATP Chief Executive Chris Kermode praised Nadal for ending the season as a world No. 1: "Rafa has had another incredible season and fully deserves this accolade for a remarkable fifth time in his career.

Since the inception of the ATP Rankings in 1973, only 17 players can lay claim to finishing year-end No.1 - it’s unquestionably one of the toughest achievements in all sport. On behalf of ATP, many congratulations to Rafa and his team."
