We were surprised Roger Federer did not commit to play Davis Cup - Costa

In an interview to Cinco Dias El Pais the Davis Cup Tournament Director Albert Costa spoke about Roger Federer not playing the final stage in Madrid. "The Swiss team did not win the qualifying stage. We were surprised that Federer would not play because having him would have been amazing but we still have a great event with Nadal, Murray and Djokovic", he said.

Costa believes equal prize money is right: "In the big tournaments women earn as same as men do. Tennis is the most fair sport between the two genders. But that's it, they should earn as much as the men do. When you do not have the same audience it can happen, but one day it will be the same."

Asked what he thinks about people believing that only rich people can play tennis, Costa replied: "That's not true. In tennis you can start training from €45 a month. There are fewer sports where you can enjoy many discounts as much as in tennis.

You cannot compare it to football because, besides being the king sport, learning it is easier. Tennis id more difficult. The big difference between another tournament and the Davis Cup is that here you play as a team, while you usually compete for yourself, you travel with your coach, while the teams have a responsability with their countries. You help one another."
