Roger Federer may have not played as much as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic during the last few years, but the 38 years old Swiss virtuoso is still ahead regarding the number of outdoor matches won in their entire careers.
We looked at the ranking which shows who are the players who won the most outdoor matches and the big three are all in the top 5. The first place is occupied by Roger Federer, who gathered no less than 944 victories on outdoor courts.
Rafael Nadal comes second, being only 48 victories away. Novak Djokovic is farther away, on 5th place, having won only 754 outdoor matches. The top 5 is completed by the retired Argentine Guilermo Vilas (817 wins) and by the former world number one Jimmy Connors (788 victories).
Now, there is a matter of time until the big three will occupy the top three regarding this stat, but the question comes whether Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be able to top Roger Federer. The odds tend to favor the Serbian and the Spaniard because they have more time left on the tour.
Roger Federer is 38 years old and he plays fewer and fewer tournaments, trying to focus on Grand Slams. Now, Nadal and Djokovic are five, respectively six, years younger, so there is plenty of time for them to dethrone Federer.
Moreover, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal can gain a quick boost of wins during the clay court season, since Federer has announced that he won’t be able to play until the grass season begins due to a right knee surgery. "See you on the grass!" said Federer.
