The outbreak of the Coronavirus emergency forced ATP to suspend the circuit at least until June and Fabio Fognini was unable to defend the title won in Montecarlo last year. Considered one of the greatest Italian players ever, he reached 9th place as the best ATP singles ranking (reached on 15 July 2019); this made him the third tennis player in his country, out of a total of four, to have entered the top 10, as well as the only one to have achieved this result in both singles and doubles.
He is a specialist in clay, a surface on which he has conquered eight of the nine titles of the ATP circuit won in singles (second in Italy in the Open era only to the 10 conquered by Adriano Panatta). Since 2014, Fognini has been in a relationship with Italian tennis compatriot Flavia Pennetta, from Brindisi, a retired player who won the 2015 US Open singles title.
The couple were engaged in 2015 and married in Ostuni on 16 June 2016. Their son, Federico, was born in May 2017. Their second child, a daughter named Farah, was born on 23 December 2019. During a recent interview, the 32-year-old revealed that he has always admired the 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer.
"Already arriving in a Slam final would be fantastic. My idol is always Federer. So I would like to play with him. Better not to face the Swiss on the fast. I would rather challenge him to Roland Garros, even if in the last few years he has missed it in a couple of circumstances,” Fognini said to Sky Sport Italy.
Fognini and Federer have met each other four times in their career with the Swiss maestro prevailing in all of their encounters. Their only match at the Grand Slams came at the Wimbledon Championships 2012.
