Roger Federer to open Basel title defense on October 27

The picturesque town of Basel hosted the ATP caravan for the first time in 1975, growing into one of the most prestigious indoor events on the Tour and attracting some of the most notable names in the world of tennis. Bjorn Borg, Guillermo Vilas, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro had all celebrated here in the past, with the hometown hero Roger Federer stealing the glory ahead all of them after ten titles in total and advancing into 13 straight finals since 2006!

Roger made a debut in Basel at the age of 17 against Andre Agassi in 1998, competing in front of the home crowd on 19 occasions and losing the opening two finals in 2000 and 2001. In 2006, Federer started his reign at the Swiss Indoors Basel, liting the first title and never losing before the title match again in all those years!

In 2012 and 2013, Juan Martin del Potro had toppled Federer in the final to steal the crown away from the home hero who bounced back in 2014, rattling off 24 straight wins in Basel and hoping for more of the same between October 26 - November 1 this year, with the organizers confirming Federer and Stan Wawrinka as the leading stars of the 2020 edition.

Due to a coronavirus, the tennis season will be halted for at least four and a half months, with small chances of seeing any action in the rest of the year. Still, the organizers of the ATP 500 event have been preparing everything to host the players, hoping for a better situation worldwide and starting selling tickets on April 1.

They have also announced that Roger Federer will play his first match on Tuesday, October 27, seeking the 25th straight triumph in Basel and the 11th title overall.
