The match lost in the Australian Open semi-final at the hands of future champion Novak Djokovic was the last of the season for Roger Federer. Beyond the suspension of the circuit, caused by the coronavirus emergency, the injury to his right knee and the double surgical operation would have forced the 20-time Grand Slam champion to forfeit until 2021.
With the return to competitions, and two majors still to be played, his two great rivals, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, will have the opportunity to shorten or even equal the Swiss record: Nadal, winning at Roland Garros, would in fact rise to 20, while for Djokovic even a possible (and almost impossible) brace would not guarantee the engagement.
Speaking on a podcast, French artist Mathieu Forget recently revealed how much he is in awe of tennis superstar Roger Federer. The son of former player Guy Forget, Mathieu also claimed that the top tennis players are artists in their own right.
Forget on Roger Federer
"The lightness of Roger Federer when he plays. It inspires me a lot in my work," Mathieu Forget said. "I have a theory, which comes from my grandfather, on the definition of an artist.
An artist is a person who manages to raise his profession or his art to the highest possible stage," said Forget. "For me, Roger Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and all the best in the world are tennis artists. Gael Monfils too.
They all have a way of playing that is unique and they do it with elegance and ease, which takes not only work but also incredible artistry and talent and creativity" - he added. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic could lead a player’s boycott of the US Open if guarantees on quarantine exemptions are not made ahead of the tournament, says a report.
According to a report in Marca, who have a good reputation for inside scoops from the ATP Tour, a ‘secret meeting’ was held between the ATP, USTA, and Players Council over the issue. Djokovic, the president of the Players Council, was in on the meeting and expressed that the ‘entire top 20’ would not participate in the US Open if guarantees were not made.
Tellingly, Djokovic is yet to commit to the US Open himself, and appears to be holding off on a decision. Roger Federer will also not be involved at the US Open, but due to a knee injury. Winning the US Open would get the Serb closer to achieving this goal and this is something he is sure to be thinking about.
He still hasn’t confirmed that he will play the event. But fans will no doubt be looking for an affirmative from Novak’s end!
