Belinda Bencic made headlines by winning the 2015 Rogers Cup at just 18 years old. The Swiss broke Ana Ivanovic's 2006 record, defeating four of the world's top six players on the way to the title. His rise has been characterized by numerous ups and downs in the following years, also thanks to a physical form not always up to par with his undisputed talent.
The Swiss took away the satisfaction of playing with compatriot Roger Federer in the Hopman Cup, managing to win the trophy both in 2018 and in 2019. This year the historic exhibition was not held due to the birth of the ATP Cup, but it is not excluded that it may return to the calendar in the future.
In a recent appearance on the 'Match Point Canada' podcast, Bencic shared some special memories relating to his career, also expressing his desire to be able to team up with the 20-time Grand Slam champion again.
Bencic on Roger Federer
“Rogers Cup is always in my heart.
That was really my breakout tournament. I will never forget that one because it was a dream week for me and I also can’t believe it’s already been five years. Time’s flying past and still I have to keep going with my tennis,” Belinda Bencic reminisced on the podcast.
“Hopefully, I can one day again maybe win the Rogers Cup and have a nice memory like that, it would be amazing. I’m definitely really looking forward to playing in Canada again,” she mentioned. Bencic looked back on her refreshing Hopman cup experience with Federer but is let down by the fact that the tournament is not on the calendar anymore.
She formed a thick bond with Roger Federer during their time together as teammates and wants to pair up on the court once more. “About the Hopman cup, I’m also really sad that it’s not happening anymore. It really was a dream come true playing with Roger [Federer] and hopefully, we can play again or maybe even at the Olympics,” Bencic said.
Roger Federer has been out of the tour since February and informed that he will only be returning next year. With the pandemic looming large, the host asked Bencic if she has been in touch with the Swiss maestro. Here’s what she replied: “I’m sure he’s doing great, we are in touch sometimes and I’m really excited that he’s coming back as well. I’m sure that he can play great tennis again”.
