Belinda Bencic was at the highest number 4 in the world last February. In her career she has won 6 WTA titles and reached the semifinals of the Us Open 2019. After the stop of the circuit due to the Coronavirus emergency, Belinda returned to the court in Rome, where she was badly defeated in the first round by Danka Kovinic for 6-3 6-1.
She reigned supreme as the Hopman Cup champion a year ago. The Swiss player along with her partner Roger Federer bagged back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. But she’s disappointed to have not had the opportunity this year.
Furthermore, the 23-year-old shared her Rogers Cup memories during a recent appearance on the ‘Match Point Canada’ podcast.
Bencic on Roger Federer
Belinda Bencic stunned the world by winning the 2015 Rogers Cup at just 18 years and 23 weeks of age.
She surpassed Ana Ivanovic’s 2006 record and defeated four of the top six players in the world en route to the Canadian title. “Rogers Cup is always in my heart. That was really my breakout tournament. I will never forget that one because it was a dream week for me and I also can’t believe it’s already been five years.
Time’s flying past and still I have to keep going with my tennis,” Belinda Bencic reminisced on the podcast. “Hopefully, I can one day again maybe win the Rogers Cup and have a nice memory like that, it would be amazing.
I’m definitely really looking forward to playing in Canada again,” she mentioned. Bencic looked back on her refreshing Hopman cup experience with Roger Federer but is let down by the fact that the tournament is not on the calendar anymore.
She formed a thick bond with Federer during their time together as teammates and wants to pair up on the court once more. “About the Hopman cup, I’m also really sad that it’s not happening anymore. It really was a dream come true playing with Roger [Federer] and hopefully, we can play again or maybe even at the Olympics,” Bencic said.
“I’m sure he’s doing great, we are in touch sometimes and I’m really excited that he’s coming back as well. I’m sure that he can play great tennis again”. Roger Federer has not played since January's Australian Open, where he lost in the semifinals to Novak Djokovic.
He underwent a right knee surgery in February and another one in June, the latter of which made him decide to skip the rest of the season.
