Nikola Pilic: 'Roger Federer will find it extremely tough to win more Majors'

Like many others, the former Davis Cup player and captain Nikola Pilic believes that Roger Federer will face many obstacles en route to the 21st Major trophy. The Croat can't see the Swiss winning more Major titles, not ruling out the possibility entirely but not giving him many chances.

Federer had to skip almost the entire 2020, struggling with a knee injury and playing only one tournament in January. The 39-year-old is working on a comeback in Dubai with his coach Ivan Ljubicic, doing his best to start playing again in two months.

Federer will skip the season's first Major at the Australian Open that begins on February 8, needing more time to recover and hoping to play again at the end of February or early March. Following a nasty knee injury in 2016, Roger made a strong comeback six months later.

He won three Major crowns between the Australian Open 2017-2018 and increased his tally to 20, challenging Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to repeat that. Roger was still among the world's best players in 2019, winning four ATP titles and securing the 28th Masters 1000 crown in Miami.

The Swiss wasted two match points in the Wimbledon final versus Novak Djokovic, still doing enough to wrap up the year in the top-3 behind two main opponents. Federer kicked off the 2020 campaign in Melbourne, battling past John Millman from the verge of defeat in the third round and fending off seven match points against Tennys Sandgren in the quarters.

With not much left in the tank, Federer made a great start versus Novak Djokovic in the semis before losing in straight sets, completing his last official match of the season and undergoing knee surgery in February.

Roger Federer hasn't played since the Australian Open last January.

Roger needed another in May after failing to take the pain away, deciding to miss the rest of the season and prepare everything for a fresh start in 2021.

Instead of Melbourne, Roger will most likely return in Rotterdam or Dubai, eager to extend his career for a year or two and fight for the most notable titles again, despite turning 40 in August. Federer's main targets in 2021 are the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Wimbledon, hoping to get at his best by the summer and be in contention at those two events.

"It's hard to imagine that Roger Federer could win another Major or two. I'm not saying it is impossible, but it will be extremely tough for him to achieve that. Besides Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, there are young guns who could challenge him, including Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev. Plus, Roger is 39. In my opinion, only two players have left in the GOAT race," Nikola Pilic said.
