'Roger Federer's also a great person off the court', says young star

At the age of 40, Roger Federer is preparing to make his return to the circuit after a very long absence. The Swiss phenomenon has not set foot on the pitch since last year's Australian Open, when he surrendered in three sets to future winner Novak Djokovic.

After his historic charity show with Rafael Nadal in Cape Town, the former world number 1 underwent a double operation on his right knee that kept him stationary for the rest of the season. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has also decided to miss the Australian Open 2021, thus giving up the trip Down Under for the first time in the last 23 editions.

The 39-year-old from Basel, who has remained in the very first positions thanks to the new ranking, will be at the start of the tournament in Doha next week. Despite the passage of time, King Roger continues to be the most popular tennis player among fans and the most admired by young people.

In an interview with the 'Olé' portal, Danish promising Holger Rune - who occupies the first position of the junior ranking and has already taken the first steps in the circuit of the greats - revealed that his dream is to follow in the footsteps of the Swiss legend.

Rune on his passion for Roger Federer

"The idea is to qualify for the main draw of the French Open and I think I have a great opportunity to score points here to get closer to the goal of qualifying," Holger Rune said.

"Then by the end of the year I would like to get into the top 100. It's a big step, but I think I can do it. My dreams are to win several Grand Slams, reach No. 1 and be like Roger Federer. He is my greatest idol and my favorite player," Rune said.

"He's an excellent player and he's also a great person off the court. I had the opportunity to train with him, chat after training and it was a great experience that I will not forget." Holger Rune will make his ATP tour main draw debut at this week's Argentina Open.

The Dane meets No. 5 seed Albert Ramos Vinolas in the first round on Tuesday - a contest he is anxiously awaiting. "I am extremely happy because it is my first ATP main draw and that it is in Argentina where I have never been makes me happy," Rune said.

"It is a great opportunity that I have to try to rise in the rankings and to play against great players so I am very anxious to start the tournament." Former World No. 1 player, Roger Federer has not played a competitive tennis match for over a year.

His semifinal loss against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open 2020 was his last match on Tour. The Swiss superstar had to undergo two knee surgeries during this period.
