Last season, Roger Federer took part in a single event on the ATP Tour: the Australian Open in Melbourne, where he beat Steve Johnson, Filip Krajinovic, John Millman, Marton Fucsovics and Tennys Sandgren before losing in the semifinals to Serbian Novak Djokovic.
Subsequently, Roger decided to take a long break from professional tennis following two knee operations, as the Tour ran for cover due to the terrible first wave of the global Coronavirus pandemic. After initially announcing the return to the Australian Open 2021, the Swiss made it known that he was not yet ready to compete and that he did not intend to submit to the stringent Australian security measures against Covid-19.
Thus, Federer has decided to return to Doha for the first time in nine years, where top level opponents await him. In the last few hours, the images of Federer training in Dubai have been causing a lot of discussion: the eight-time winner of Wimbledon seems to be wearing shoes from the On brand, of which he has been actively involved since 2019.
However, Roger has always worn the shoes provided by the US brand Nike: this is how we have been accustomed to admire him, since his inception on the Tour. Judging by the fantasy and decoration of the shoes, it seems to be an unreleased model not yet unveiled at public.
The company On, for his part, has decided to remain vague at the moment: "Roger Federer and On are constantly working on the next generation of high-performance shoes," he said. The Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha is an ATP 250 event established in 1993.
Over the course of its twenty-eight editions, the tournament has seen triumphs such as Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Marcelo Rios, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, just to name a few.
With his three successes (in 2005, 2006 and 2011), Swiss Federer is the most successful player in Qatar. Last year Andrei Rublev triumphed over the young Frenchman Corentin Moutet, with a score of 6-2 7-6. Roger came back to Doha in 2012, forfeiting the semifinals before taking the field with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
It was the last participation of the champion from Basel in the Qatar Open.
