'Roger Federer is my role model, although I never met him,' says Bianca Andreescu

After skipping the entire 2020 season due to a knee injury, Bianca Andreescu returned to action in Melbourne in February. Thanks to her 2019 points, the young Canadian is still ranked inside the top-10, hoping for more prominent results in the rest of the season following three notable titles claimed two years ago still as a teenager.

After reaching the Australian Open second round and the Phillip Island Trophy semi-final, Bianca had to skip Doha and Dubai due to a leg injury, recovering and making a return this week in Miami. Asked about Roger Federer in the press conference, Andreescu said that she never met Roger in person.

Praising the Swiss, the Canadian said that she has been watching his matches since she was a kid, admiring him a lot and seeing him as a role model. Like Bianca, Roger had to deal with a severe knee injury, skipping almost the entire 2020 season and returning to action after 13 months in Doha.

The Swiss defeated Daniel Evans before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili after wasting a match point, deciding to skip Dubai and take more time off the court ahead of the clay season.

Bianca Andreescu praised Roger Federer in Miami.

"Just feeling good out there, I think that's that main thing that's going to help me get rid of that.

I am a professional athlete that's wearing and tearing her body, so it's normal to have pains here and there, and it's not like I am the only one that's retiring from tournaments and stuff like that. So many players do the same.

I am feeling confident going into the event and always trying my hardest. I am the type of person to always set high expectations for myself. Now, my main goal is to be happy out there and enjoy myself as much as I can. Even if my tennis feels off, I want to take it as something I can push through and feel fulfilled after the match.

I never met Roger Federer. I might have taken a picture with him when I was little; I don't remember. But I've seen him play ever since I was little. He's such a great role model for me, as well, for many people. He's given tennis a lot. He's one of the best of all time," Bianca Andreescu said.
