Dominic Thiem is ready to return "great" to the International BNL of Italy. The Austrian tennis player has experienced a complicated start to the season and in recent weeks he is trying to find him in the best form of him.

In the first tournament of his 2021 played on clay, the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Thiem reached the semifinals and lost only to Alexander Zverev, who then won the Spanish event by beating Matteo Berrettini in the final. "Playing the Mutua Madrid Open is always incredible, I love that tournament," Thiem explained in his first 'Roman' conference.

“As for my fitness and my health, everything is fine. Before Madrid I trained hard for about two and a half weeks. My knee was giving me several problems, but now it doesn't seem to hurt anymore. Historically I have always struggled in Rome, it is as if I never had enough time to adapt to the playing conditions, which are very different from those in Madrid.

I hope I can do better than the last few times. I will face a very strong opponent in the first round (Marton Fucsovics, ed), but I hope to do well in this tournament. Next Gen and Slam? We only need to improve in this tournament category.

Since Sascha (Alexander Zverev, ed) clinched his first Masters 1000 in 2017, none of the Big 3 have managed to win the ATP Finals. Obviously in the Slam tournaments they are still very dominant. It is much more difficult to beat them in a major, because it is played at the best of five sets.

But we have reached the finals more than once and I think we will also start winning them in the near future. Many people underestimate the era in which we are playing, we share the locker room with the three strongest players in history." Talking to the press ahead of his opening match, Dominic Thiem talked about the comeback of Roger Federer and his chances at Wimbledon this year.

Thiem reflects on Roger Federer

“It’s amazing to have Roger Federer with us. I’m also looking forward to seeing him play Wimbledon and Roland again… If he is physically 100%, I guess he can still get a lot in the tournament he’s in,” Dominic Thiem mentioned.

Thiem responded positively when asked about Federer’s chances of winning his 21st Grand Slam title. He said: “I think so. Why not? I don’t think he would play otherwise. He’s too good… I guess if he knew he wasn’t playing for the big titles anymore, he wouldn’t be playing.

So I expect him, especially at Wimbledon, to be able to go very, very far and also play for the title”. Both Federer and Thiem might find it hard to achieve success at the French Open this year, as each of them had to stay away from the game for quite some time.
