Serena Williams: 'Roger Federer is a genius and greatest player ever'

Following an early Rome Open exit, Serena Williams asked for a wild card at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma, remaining in Italy and seeking form ahead of Roland Garros. In the opening match, the 23-time Major winner took down the 17-year-old Lisa Pigato 6-3, 6-2 in 68 minutes, getting broken once and delivering four breaks to control the scoreboard and march into the next round.

Asked about Roger Federer, Serena didn't miss a chance to honor her favorite player, calling him a genius and the most outstanding player that you have to like. Born within two months in the summer of 1981, Roger Federer and Serena Williams have become the most recognized tennis names of the previous two decades, winning 43 Major titles combined and earning numerous records.

Roger and Serena turn 40 this summer, and they are still eager to chase notable titles and results, despite setbacks with injuries.

Serena Williams honored Roger Federer, calling him the greatest player.

A day after Serena, Roger will step on the court on Tuesday at home in Geneva, playing his second tournament following the last year's Australian Open.

Two legends had a chance to share the court in a competitive match at the Hopman Cup 2019 when Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic toppled Frances Tiafoe and Serena Williams 4-2, 4-3 in swift 46 minutes. The Swiss pair served great in the opening set, breaking Tiafoe in the fifth game after Bencic's return winner and taking the set after Roger's hold at love a few minutes later.

Roger and Belinda saved a break chance in the second set's fourth game and won the tie break 5-3 after Federer's superb volley, celebrating another fine performance in the ultimate clash of two tennis giants who had a fantastic time on the court.

"I think two words sum it up: Roger Federer. He's just a synopsis of greatness, class, amazing, and really changed the game. You see players playing like him, moving like him, doing his techniques. The guy is a genius.

I just feel like he is really the greatest player. Just look at him. You can not like the guy; that's how I feel. His game is so fantastic. If I could only play like him!" Serena Williams said.
