John McEnroe names greatest thing that has happened to Serena Williams

American tennis legend John McEnroe says Venus Williams has been the greatest thing that has happened to Serena Williams. Serena and Venus have always had a very close relationship and have been nothing but a strong support to each other.

In the early 2000s, Serena and Venus were considered as the top matchup to watch on the WTA Tour. Serena and Venus pushed each other to become even better players, all while keeping a close relationship and being there for each other.

"And Venus, I’ve said — she’s been the greatest thing that’s ever happened to her sister. She’s obviously an unbelievable player. And she has some varied interests as well. We don’t know as much.

Venus has been pretty tight-lipped for a long time. It’s hard to know where exactly she’s coming from. But I hope she’s in a good place and she deserves to be," McEnroe told ESPN.

McEnroe thinks Venus Williams may follow Serena in retirement

Serena is planning to retire after this year's US Open.

Venus hasn't made any announcements but some think she may as well call it a career once her US Open campaign is finished. "I’d be surprised if she plays much longer," McEnroe said. "As a matter of fact, I would think that she would stop playing the same time Serena does."

Fellow ESPN tennis expert Chris Evert joined McEnroe in dropping praise on Venus. Evert said that Venus has always been nothing but a great support to Serena. "I think, again, the thing about Venus, it’s just lovely to see the support she’s given Serena.

She’s always in the stands when Serena is playing big matches. And she’s always shown a lot of class and a lot of grace off the court as well as on the court," Evert said. In the US Open first round, Venus plays Alison van Uytvanck. On the other side, Serena Williams plays Danka Kovinic.
