Nick Kyrgios reacts to Serena Williams' match breaking US Open attendance record

Nick Kyrgios thought Serena Williams once again showed the influence she has and how much she is appreciated and respected among the tennis community and tennis fans. On Monday, Williams kicked off her final US Open with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Danka Kovinic on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

That match set a new attendance record at the US Open as 29,402 fans came out to show support to Williams. "Oh yeah [I was watching Serena Williams’ match]. Well, you know, I can't imagine how she's feeling and I was actually watching the match with my girlfriend in the lounge.

She was really excited. Just the buzz that she brought, broken history with the amount of people buying tickets and viewing which is incredible. That's my goal, to grow the sport as much as I can. So hopefully Serena can keep going and I can go on as well," Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios entered Arthur Ashe after Williams' victory

After Williams made a winning start to her US Open run, Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis concluded Monday's programme for Arthur Ashe Stadium. Kyrgios, who reached his first Grand Slam final at this past Wimbledon saw off,his close friend Kokkinakis 6-3 6-4 7-6 (4).

"Schedule came out. I saw that I was following Serena, two days before I'm playing. I'm kind of thinking, this is probably going to be the biggest match not of her career, but the US Open is probably not going to have a bigger match.

To follow that, it's a special opportunity. To play one of my probably best friends after Serena's possible last match, with a record-breaking attendance, it's insane," Kyrgios added. Williams plays Anett Kontaveit in the second round, while Kyrgios faces next Benjamin Bonzi.

Kyrgios and Bonzi will be going head-to-head for the first time in their respective careers when they meet at the US Open.
