Rafael Nadal reacts to Serena Williams' career coming to end

Rafael Nadal described Serena Williams as "an amazing champion" and thanked the 23-time Grand Slam champion for everything that she has done for the game of tennis On Friday, Williams played the final match of her career.

In the US Open third round, Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Williams 7-5 6-7 (4) 6-1. "Thanks Serena Williams for everything you've done for our sport!!! Amazing champion," Nadal wrote on his Instagram Story after Williams concluded her US Open campaign.

Nadal 'privileged' to have played in the same era as Williams

Nadal, 36, and 40-year-old Williams have won pretty much everything over the last two decades. "Hi Serena. From my side, I can just say thank you. Thank you for all the amazing things that you did for our sport, such an amazing ambassador.

It has been a huge honor to share almost all of my tennis career with you," Nadal said in a video for the ATP Tour. "And honestly, I have plenty of memories of you winning, playing, and emotional moments. It's been a huge privilege.

So just all the best for your future and life. Hopefully, we can keep seeing each other around the tour, and as I said, all the very best. See you soon." Meanwhile, Nadal is still going strong as he has won two Grand Slam titles this year and has a real shot at finishing the year as the top-ranked player in the world.

Nadal, who is currently the third-ranked player in the world, doesn't have a single point to defend in the rest of the year. "One more year at the age of 36 - finish the year probably, if nothing goes wrong, in the top five," Nadal said.

"Yeah, it's better than what we expected when we started the year and we didn't know much about how the things going to go." Nadal is currently battling for his fifth US Open title.
