Eugenie Bouchard shares thoughts on Serena Williams' final US Open run

Former world No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard praised Ajla Tomljanovic for how she handled everything that came with playing Serena Williams in the American's final tournament. In the US Open third round, Tomljanovic defeated Williams 7-5 6-7 (4) 6-1 in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Tomljanovic kept it very respectful toward Williams during and after the match. “How she (Tomljanovic) handled the whole Serena situation I thought it was really so gracious and humble and like I think a lot of people became fans of her because of that.

(It was) unbelievable. Like, I don’t know if I’ve seen a sporting event like that before,” Bouchard said on Tennis Channel, per Sportskeeda.

Bouchard on her decision to come to Chennai

Bouchard, 28, is making her Chennai debut this week.

So far, Bouchard has had a good campaign as she has been through to the Chennai quarterfinal after beating “It’s rare for someone like me at the stage of my career to go to a country I’ve never been to before, so I get excited like a kid going to a new place because usually we play for the same tournaments in the same cities.

So, to go somewhere new is like super exciting,” Bouchard said. Bouchard, who was out for a year and a half due to a shoulder surgery, returned to action in August. In Chennai, Bouchard is playing her third tournament of the season.

“This would be my third tournament back from being off for like a year and a half so I still feel like, rusty. I just need tournaments to start feeling better and more normal on court,” Bouchard said. In Chennai, Bouchard started her campaign by beating Joanne Zugar in straight sets.

In her following match, Bouchard defeated Karman Kaur Thandi. Bouchard plays next the winner of the match between Nadia Podoroska and Tatjana Maria.
